So I still feel like yelling about this episode, but I guess it's still to early to post spoilers on twitter, so I'll post my important drama feelings under a cut here. Please talk to me about it too :?

1) Nekota is awesome, I hope she gets more to do than run around after Tokai in future episodes though.
2) Miwa didn't get much to do! Actually I barely noticed her when watching it live, but after subbing it I realised she does talk with Sera a lot.
3) There are really a lot of different male doctors in this show, how am I supposed to tell them all apart? Especially when they are wearing face masks half the time???
4) The scene with Tokai talking to his mother on the phone!!! "why don't you have 5 girlfriends" really made me laugh a lot. Also... yet another Nino character with father issues, what a surprise. I'm looking forward to more backstory!
5) Competent Nino is ... so hot ♥
6) I don't think this part was supposed to be funny, but Minagawa's face when Sera was like "I worked out that you like this one tree" was HILARIOUS to me. Her eyes bugged right out.
7) In the meeting about using the snipe on Minagawa, when the director says that Saeki is the chair of the ethics committee, I genuinely gasped in horror, haha. Since I always translate stuff about ethics committees at work, it really amuses me that ethics committee membership was such a point of drama XD
8) Do you think Takashina actually did know about the aneurysm? Is he 100% evil or is he just being used by Nishizaki and/or Saeki?
9) lol Tokai slicing his food really thinly at the "study group".
10) I don't understand why Saeki thinks Tokai cares about not being allowed to use his fancy black pean. Like who cares about that? Well, clearly a lot of people, but it's stupid >:(
11) I'm sort of annoyed that I have to write SNIPE in capitals all the time, but that's how it's written in the unpublished paper that they got from the trial coordinator.
12) My final QC check was to search the whole sub file for the word "spine" just in case I wrote that instead of "snipe"... amazingly, I had not.

Thank you for your hard work! You're really fast!
As for the story, I think Takashina really didn't know. I don't think he's an evil, maybe he actually thinks that he can save many people with this thing. But I was somehow dissapointed that they show him as mentally weak man, he should be like an opponent of Tokai, but he's too weak to compete with him. I really hope he will become stronger in future episodes.
And did Saeki really notice this aneurysm? His face was quite strange when Tokai talked about it, and he turned off his laptop when Tokai came in.

Yeah, I think I agree with you. It seemed that Tokai thought Takashina knew about it, but I'm leaning towards thinking that he just really believes in the Snipe. "Mentally weak" is a good way to put it.
I hadn't considered that Saeki might not know either. I'll have to watch that part again!

I just watched the raw version. Have to wait until tomorrow morning for watch it with your sub. Hehehe...
But from what I watched I also love scene where mom call Tokai-sensei. I love how Tokai-sensei pick the phone and asked "Nani, Kaa-chan?". Thats remind me of LOVE Concert where he brought a bucket of fower.
Looks like i'll love Nekota-chan. Her personality really like a cat which sometimes doesn't care but know what she have to do. Also... she is really know where to find Tokai-sensei. That hillarious when Tokai-sensei come out under his blanket on sofa. šŸ˜‚
Tokai-sensei character seems same lie Nino character nee... looks like Nino not really have much trouble with Tokai-sensei's character but still operations scenes must be a hrdwork for him..
I want to know what happend with his father soon.

There are definitely a lot of similarities between Nino and Tokai...

Hi! Thanks for the subs! I'm not into medical dramas at all and if it wasn't Nino I wouldn't watch it X( I'm covering the whole operation scenes!! (Although action is my favorite genre, i'm weak against operations)!! Nande!!

Anyway here's some of my thoughts!!
Tokai(Nino) I thought he would be a cocky skilled doctor in the drama, but he's an Akuma, a little one!
What's with every doctor getting shaky hands in operations -__- guys how did you get to step in the operating room!!

:D Can i predict? Can I?
Just skip if you don't want to read this!! (I think Saeki sensei has something on Tokai that bends him!! Makes him in his debt!! I'm really curious about this!! And this is why Tokai is like that!? His behaviour and the way he asks for money in return!! So I wonder if it's a good debt or a bad one!! This is making me curious now to continue the drama) Since i suck in medical stuff, XP I'm more interested in the human side of it!!

Sorry for the long post!

OMG yess! I love Neko-chan I am glad I am not alone with this. She became easily one of my favorite characters and I'm sad she's not part of the 'main characters'. I also just rly enjoy how her and Tokai work alongside each other (like she gets him while other's don't, and it's wonderful). Still hope we get to see a lot more of her.

I work in medical translation so I'm not squeamish about medical dramas, but I don't usually watch them either. I hope the operation scenes weren't too bad for you!

You're definitely right about the shaky hands D: When he dropped an instrument I was really shocked for a minute, haha.

I like your prediction - sounds interesting! I definitely want to know what's going on between Saeki and Tokai too...

Either she just trusts his skill cause she works with him for a while... or there is something deeper which we will see in later episodes as to why she blindly trusts him, like something from the past that connects them in a way. Hoping for latter.

I'm still on end of episode endorphins right now, but thought I'd share some thoughts while it's still fresh. Also, I', terrible with the names and this is a huge cast, so I'm going to use incomprehensible nicknames for the moment.

CatNurse is my favourite female character so far, and Baby Resident is very sweet, though I suspect he's going to cry at least twice per episode going forward, and that might wear thin. (I should keep a tally)

Tokai... Oh Nino. His Face. His Hair. The Attitude. Does his character qualify as Tsundere? 'Cause I'd totally get the appeal of Tokai over ... others who popularised the trope.

Ah, I just hate how competent medical field is. Patients should be priority. Tokai (and probably Saeki) could have avoid all the complications of Mrs. Minagawa operation in the first place because they knew about the aneurysm before the operation but still they left Takashina proceed. Okay, Tokai tried to stop him in a subtle way(?) but failed. He knew about the consequences of it but still didn't say anything until the damage was done. Thank god he's a skilled doctor and the patient was saved.

I don't think Takashina knew about the aneurysm(?) but still he didn't begged Tokai to save the patient even though he knew he couldn't do it on his own...his hands were shaking for god's sake!
For the way Tokai looks at that Black Pean, it should definitely be something important. Maybe it has to do with his father?
I like it, this drama, thank you so much for subbing :)

waaaaah!! loving that there is a discussion like this because i am super on a high on black pean right now! medical dramas are not exactly my cup of tea but this was intense!!

i am torn on whose side i should be on since they all seem kind of evil and they have a lot of ulterior motives and my gosh, do doctors really have this political ambition. gaaah. HAHAHHAA. so now really trying to figure out who is evil and who is not altho itā€s generally too early to tell, i guess.

i love nekota too!! tokai has his little team of nekota, that medical researcher girl and now Sera. i am excited on how that’s gonna unfold. for sure tokai said that 100 million crap so that he can tie sera to him because he liked the kid. hahaha. for sure everyone on his ~little team~has some kimd of sera passion/goodness

when they were in the meeting deciding if they should use the snipe or not- that was genius. gaaaah. it’s like anything tojo university decides on, they lose hahaha. if the snipe suceeds then saeki method is a thing of the past. if the snipe does not succeed it’s also their fault because the ethics committee approved it like un)kngvrb, lmjbtfr. really. tokai saved them, man.

i think takashina didn’t know about the aneurysm. i think he just believed in snipe and neglected ~other~ things. saeki tho -__- u are smart but i’m not into trusting you yet. grrrr.

ahhh excited also for the tokai - saeki history to unfold. is tokai in debt to saeki because of that clamp left in the chest?? was it just tokai’s name and someone else’s mistake (ultimately pinned on tokai?)??

ALSO, i just wanna shout at the screen all the time: EXCUSE ME, THERE IS A DYING PERSON, y are u talking so much-save it for laterzz. ofc it makes the drama. more exciting tho hahaha,

lastly, thank you so much for subbing this drama. huhu. i was super scared no one was gonna pick it up because of the medical terms. but you are a goddess!! šŸ’›

can’t wait to fangirl again for the next episode!!

So just finished watching ep 1 (thank you again for the subs). There is a lot of similarities with Doctor X, what with the hospital politics, and the walking in mid-op to save the day and demanding large amounts of money for surgery - at least it's not all cancer operations though.

I'm not sure about all the surgeons immediately going to pieces the minute the surgery goes wrong (although I did enjoy the blood spurting everywhere). I can get them faltering or freezing up but turning into screaming, trembling messes seems a little over the top, and then despite the seriousness they all stand around for 5 minutes doing nothing while Nino threatens them.

Like, I'm not expecting super realism from a medical drama but it could be a touch more believable, they are trained professionals after all and time is of the essence.

I think Takashina didn't know. He was too busy thinking that the SNIPE would be a political blow for the hospital that he didn't really look at the rest of the patient's scans. Saeki definitely knew though and he fully banked on Tokai fixing it up once he let the problem go ahead so he could win politically.

My main theory at the moment is that the Black Pean used to belong to Tokai's Dad, and Saeki left that clamp in the patient but put the blame on the Dad and started using the Black Pean himself. Tokai's there at the hospital to find out the truth (and get revenge) and claim it back for himself.

Thank you very much for subs! I can't finish it in one hour since I keep on pausing so I can breath.

I almost have the same theory with ladyc2 only difference is that it was Tokai's Dad originally doing the operation but Saeki swooped in to take over and left the forceps there. I also think the 'Saeki method' is Tokai's dad technique that's why Tokai worked hard to learn it.

I still can't come up with a reason why Tokai is saving Saeki's ass when Saeki did something wrong to his father. I'm looking forward to know what his main goal is. Saeki is definitely guilty of something or else he won't let Tokai do as he pleases.

About Tokai, I understand how people's first reaction is to hate him. The thing is, he might be heartless and ruthless but he still cares about the patient. The scene where he tells Takashina to die to if the patient dies shows that actually cares for them.
I don't understand why the whole hospital treats him like shit though? I know he made people resign but from I can tell, he won't interfere if the surgeon in charge hasn't messed up in the first place.

I am waiting for Nekota's backstory on how she ended up working for Tokai. I love female headstrong characters. This show is oozing with testosterone but you have this bad ass nurse helping Tokai. Sera brings in the 'heart/warmth' that Tokai certainly lacks. Looking at the preview for next week, he'll go thru a lot pf pain and suffering but he will come out a lot wiser than before. Tokai's mom is adorable teasing him about his lovelife and sending him rice. Maybe she is the reason why Tokai still have tiny bit of soft spot. Tokai living at the hospital is one advantage of being male. The safety/security risks lessens when you are male. A female doctor can never do that. I wonder if his training really hard/saving money is something to do with her mom? I'm afraid they might pull the "sick mom" card. If only I know Japanese, I would definitely read the novel.

Thank you, thank you for the subs.

Ack my comment got erased somehow before I could submit.

Personally, I don't liked Nino's character that much. He seems too smug and cocky in an off-putting way. Actually most of the doctors on the show kinda seem that way. Reminds me of Doctor X but for some reason she seemed more likable. Hoping we will see more character development and background for him in the next episodes.

I thought it was sweet how Sera connected with Minagawa about the cherry blossoms. 😊🌸

Did you want D-Addicts subtitle drama community to know you're subbing Black Pean? I didn't see it on the fansub map or in the forum.

I totally agree!~ Neko is really awesome!~ :3 I want more future interactions of her and Tokai sensei. XD
Sera is a new resident doctor, right? It feels like it's his first time in everything. He should have been at least exposed to emergency cases when he was still an intern. hmmm I wonder why he looked kind of incompetent in the drama and too emotionally attached to his patients. That's a big no no in the medical world. >___

You're welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I know what you mean though - if Tokai and Saeki knew about the aneurysm, they should have done something about it. There are lives at stake! But that's the way dramas go, I suppose.

Might as well put my short (sorry ;;) thoughts here so:

Okay, the drama did remind me of Doctor X because the corruption, position ladder(?) scenario; while Tokai-sensei can be related to Daimon-sensei in terms of skills, there's a huge difference so, it's not really a copy as what others (on some forums) said. I can't say for the operations though since I don't know much about the medical field.

Nurse Neko is my best girl for this drama, haha. Tokai-Neko tag team is just amazing >=D I look forward for more moments hihi :))

I am curious to see how Sera would go now that he had to serve Tokai for like...forever? (Because 100M yen is @_@)

Oh and Tokai-sensei. I was just smirking/evilly laughing everytime he gives out snarky comments, the way he acts and looks... Like "you little devil you..." Mwahahahaha xD

That ep 1 ending though...no wonder it's the drama's title? lol

Again, thank you for subbing this.

There really are a lot of ambiguous characters! I want to be on Nino's side because he's Nino, but Tokai is not the best person either, haha.

I really love that snipe meeting scene :D And yeah, I really want to know about that clamp in the chest too!

"ALSO, i just wanna shout at the screen all the time: EXCUSE ME, THERE IS A DYING PERSON" hahaha exactly!

Glad you enjoyed the episode. I really had fun subbing it so I'm looking forward to next week too!

I haven't seen Doctor X - maybe I'll check it out later.

Yeah, the standing around doing nothing bothered me a bit. But I guess they are dramatically necessary for the most part. I was really taken aback by the surgeons' shaky hands... surely they've been trained for this kind of pressure!

Interesting theory. I'm looking forward to finding out more about that backstory.

The first episode was incredible, I've watched it twice and I still want to watch it again! It felt like so many things happened. And there's so much more I want to know - why is Nekota so awesome, and how come she's on good terms with Tokai when everyone else hates him? What's the deal with Tokai and Saeki? And what's up with the black pean - I thought it was actually a useful piece of medical technology, but it's just an aesthetic choice to symbolise a successful surgery?

3) On my first watch, I got confused between the surgeries in Operating Rooms 1 and 3 because both operating doctors looked similar with their face masks on, even though their gowns are different colours

6) I had the same reaction! Minagawa looked so surprised that Sera has figured out what she kept on looking at

9) I loved the "study group" scene! And how the coordinate kept calling it a study group
