black pean #1 spoilers

So I still feel like yelling about this episode, but I guess it's still to early to post spoilers on twitter, so I'll post my important drama feelings under a cut here. Please talk to me about it too :?


1) Nekota is awesome, I hope she gets more to do than run around after Tokai in future episodes though.
2) Miwa didn't get much to do! Actually I barely noticed her when watching it live, but after subbing it I realised she does talk with Sera a lot.
3) There are really a lot of different male doctors in this show, how am I supposed to tell them all apart? Especially when they are wearing face masks half the time???
4) The scene with Tokai talking to his mother on the phone!!! "why don't you have 5 girlfriends" really made me laugh a lot. Also... yet another Nino character with father issues, what a surprise. I'm looking forward to more backstory!
5) Competent Nino is ... so hot ♥
6) I don't think this part was supposed to be funny, but Minagawa's face when Sera was like "I worked out that you like this one tree" was HILARIOUS to me. Her eyes bugged right out.
7) In the meeting about using the snipe on Minagawa, when the director says that Saeki is the chair of the ethics committee, I genuinely gasped in horror, haha. Since I always translate stuff about ethics committees at work, it really amuses me that ethics committee membership was such a point of drama XD
8) Do you think Takashina actually did know about the aneurysm? Is he 100% evil or is he just being used by Nishizaki and/or Saeki?
9) lol Tokai slicing his food really thinly at the "study group".
10) I don't understand why Saeki thinks Tokai cares about not being allowed to use his fancy black pean. Like who cares about that? Well, clearly a lot of people, but it's stupid >:(
11) I'm sort of annoyed that I have to write SNIPE in capitals all the time, but that's how it's written in the unpublished paper that they got from the trial coordinator.
12) My final QC check was to search the whole sub file for the word "spine" just in case I wrote that instead of "snipe"... amazingly, I had not.

10) I have no idea what is up with Saeki, does he just have a big ego or like? I kinda think maybe he blamed the pean being left in someone's body on Tokai's dad... (but it's only the first episode so)

ALSO, the most stupid thing as a doctor that Sera did in this episode is when he was looking for blood on the shelves? Like??? lol

You're welcome! I definitely understand what you mean about pausing to breathe.

Tokai does seem to care more about the patients than some of the other doctors do, but still, he knew that Minagawa could have an aneurysm and just waited for it to happen to make his point... Well, he tried to stop the snipe operation, but he could have kept insisting or actually explained why. But I agree that it doesn't make much sense that everyone treats him so badly!

I loved the scene with his mother, too. I hope they don't go with making her sick... since there already seems to be some background about Tokai's dad to get into, maybe they won't.

I don't think I would want to hang out with Tokai in real life, but he's an interesting character at least. I'm definitely looking forward to more background all around.

About D-addicts: sure, I don't mind if someone wants to link it there or whatever. I don't use that site much myself, so I don't really know how it works.

I think Sera is still in training, yeah. He said he's on rotation at this cardiovascular department, but he doesn't have any experience in surgery even though that's this department's specialty, so I guess he must be quite new. Maybe that's why they made him answer the phone at the beginning.

Yeah, the stuff with the cherry blossoms was cute, but I think it would be impossible for him to get so involved with every patient! He'll have to toughen up, I think.

I haven't seen Doctor X but then I'm sure all medical dramas have similarities.

It was definitely a packed episode! I was also surprised at the black pean just being symbolic... I don't understand why everyone is so impressed by it. Saeki even has one on his desk?? So weird. I guess it's an interesting contrast with the snipe, though.

3) I agree! When I watched it raw to start with, I had no idea who was doing which surgery. Hopefully we can learn to recognise them as the series goes on...

Well yeah, you're right, that's how dramas go. Anyway, I really like the drama, Nino is awesome as always and the other characters I like sensitive Sera (of course) and that Nekota girl... I hope we get to know more about her as well as Tokai father.

I m late to the party :((

I feel Takashina didnt know that the patient had aneurysm before so he thought Snipe really could solve the problem. I just surprised he was so nervous at her emergency operation ended up he couldn't continue at all. And i m so disappointed he chose more his pride than begging Tokai to help him and if Sera didn't beg Tokai the patient would die.

For Tokai, he cares the patients on his own way with he coming up to the OR finishing the operation other doctors couldn't do though he at first demanded the money lol. I m just curious how he uses the money ransom with he is a freeloader in the hospital haha.

Nurse Nekoda is my fave character too, she and Tokai make great team and i really hope she has more scene in the future episode :D
what a calculative guy Saeki is he almost killed the woman patient for his goal to show others that Snipe actually not working in every cases :O
I really think Tokai and Takashina are getting caught of the power battle between Saeki, Tojo medical director and Nishizaki playing in the hospital or for the chairman chair.

And i m really curious what kind of deal between Tokai and Saeki had before Tokai often saving his ass in the OR actually and doing anything as he likes there. what kind of relationship between Tokai's dad and Saeki before and the Xray with blackpean inside is belong to whom and how it ended there.

And i dont get with the Doctor X comparison with this drama because both of them has hospitals political or corruption story, i think most of medical dorama deal with it or the corruption inside the hospital haha.

Yeah, it's just a pair of black forceps, it's not that impressive! The SNIPE looked more impressive.

I hope so too! With doctors wearing their face mask, hair net and glasses, it's hard to recognise them. Only Nino seems distinctive to me

1. I AGREE! I LOVE NEKOTA SO MUCH! But the fact that she didn’t even make it to the poster bothers me, like I really don’t want to see Sera taking her role as Tokai-sensei’s “assistant” (given that he does owe him 100,000,000 yen) when Sera is still not familiar with how Tokai-sensei works :(

3. S A M E! Like even w/o their mask, I’m already bad at recognizing people XD
Tho I gotta say that Nino’s eyes themselves are different and they convey stuffs really well! Also thanks to Takashina for wearing a fancy glasses too, very recognizable XD

4. What I love about this scene is that he called his mom “kaachan”, which I didn’t expect from that man known as “devil” XD
Also, the fact that he made a weird face when her mom happily talks about his father being proud really bothers me. Looking forward to the back story!

5. Who am I to not agree with this! I replayed his operating scenes the most XD

8. I think Takashina wasn’t aware. My thought is that he was used by the doctor from the other university, being told that it’s useful yet not completely informed of the risk? And I don’t think Saeki-sensei himself know about it. Tokai-sensei is technically the doctor in charge of Minagawa-san anyway (even tho Sera took care of her more than Tokai-sensei did XD), so I assume he knows her condition the most.

10. I think there might be another possibility. This might be me over-imagining stuffs, but in the film Tokai-sensei looked at, there was a pean there on the chest? And the doctor in charge was his father? Had his father be the one who hold the black pean before Saeki-sensei, it’s possible that either his dad made a mistake or was framed for making a mistake? But again, this is just me thinking too much XD

12. I LAUGHED SO HARD READING THAT XDD

Additional comment: one of the director of Toji university is definitely suspicious imo, like he might’ve teamed up with the other university to bring Saeki-sensei down. Saeki-sensei’s sentence to Tokai-sensei saying “You stopped them from bugging me” kinda bothers me tbh, like there is something within Tojo itself probably~

Takashina is definitely not a very good surgeon IMO (even though he trained in ~America~, haha). How can you be that shaky?

I haven't seen Doctor X but it seems to be quite a different kind of story to this one.

1. Ah I hope not. But Nekota is a scrub nurse and Sera is a doctor, so they should have different roles at the hospital... hopefully the directors will distinguish them properly!

+ I think there's definitely something shady going on with the upper management at the two universities and maybe the journal editor, too. How horrible! I mean, I get wanting to become the head of the society and improve your hospital's reputation, but not by undermining another hospital and actively putting patients in danger >:( Lol I am so invested in this drama already!

1. But based on the first ep, it appeared to me that during operation, Nekota and Sera could be given the same task to assist Tokai-sensei. Though I’m not really sure how it really works XD

Lab coat is one thing, but looking cool while sewing stitches is a completely different level XD
I saw a clip on the BTS and apparently, Nino also familiarize himself with the stitching method + utility by sewing something during the break? Haven’t watched it though XD

10. From everyone’s PoV, I think they’re impresed bc using Black Pean implies that the operation is successful. Like one of the girl said: “it’s like a ritual”
And afaik, the only person who kept mentioning Black Pean is Saeki-sensei himself, mostly in front of Tokai. So I’d guess that the only two who make a big fuss over the Black Pean are those 2 XD

+ I completely agree, but I could see how they ended up that way. The higher ups don’t directly get involved with the patient, and from the 2 universities there, the higher ups take role on pulling the strings instead of being on the set, if that makes sense?
From what I see, as they’re not the ones directly responsible for the patient’s life, they consider the patients as a stepping stone (or perhaps, a mere “tool”) to their own ambission, and that’s how the competition turned out that way imo. Yes, it really is an unhealthy competition >:(

I agree. Saeki definitely is aware that Tokai has that x-ray and that he is looking into something beyond the value of the Black Pean itself. Which is why, as what I mentioned on my first comment, my thought is that there's a possibility that Tokai's dad owned the Black Pean before Saeki and there was an accident/he was framed for the accident causing that x-ray result itself, given that the doctor in charge of that patient was Tokai's Dad. This resonates with Saeki's constant statement on "There is only one person who can own the Black Pean" IF that pean on the x-ray is indeed the Black Pean.

But well, we know too little to take a conclusion on anything yet~ I guess we'll know more next ep~

I thought this too, especially after Tokia looks at the scans and the black pean is in the lungs, maybe Sekai is blackmailing Tokia to work for him and in return Tokai is making all the people in his department quit. The drama is already so captivating and I loved Nino's role.. Wow!

My quick thoughts about episode 1:
- Nekota was a scene stealer! I loved the way she smiled after Tokai said 頑張らないとな. Her character is truly befitting her name.
- Nino ad lib at the bloody hand slap!
- Saeki's a real bastard.
- Nino can act the hell out of his role from behind a surgical mask. RESPECT.
- I feel sorry for Takashina already. I do think he's blindsided by medical technology but I have this feeling he'd be much more successful if he didn't set himself up against Tiny Tokai.
